About the Show
Coal Country, by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen, tells the true story of the 2010 Upper Big Branch mine disaster, the deadliest American mining accident in nearly 50 years, which killed 29 men in Montcoal, West Virginia. Drawn from over 40 hours of interviews with survivors and the families they left behind, this play with music brings their voices directly to the stage, woven together with original songs by Steve Earle that serve as a haunting, elegiac heartbeat throughout the piece. At its core, Coal Country is a story about what happens when corporate greed overrides worker safety, and why solidarity among working people matters now more than ever. Marking Three Bone Theatre's first musical, it's a raw, deeply human tribute to the miners' lives and a call to honor the dignity and rights of working people.
