welcoming three Bone Theatre's new Managing Director

Three Bone Theatre is thrilled to announce that Lisa Miller has been hired by the Board of Directors as its first full-time Managing Director. Miller is joining co-founder and Artistic Director, Robin Tynes-Miller, as co-leaders of the nonprofit.

“Three Bone is an outstanding Charlotte theater that has been producing meaningful works for 14 years. I am delighted to join the team as we lean into the future,” shares Miller, a patron of Three Bone Theatre. Miller brings more than two decades of nonprofit leadership and governance experience. After a career in corporate litigation in Boston, MA and Washington, DC, Lisa worked with nonprofit organizations in the Charlotte region and most recently served on the management team at McColl Center. She has also served as Board Chair of Children’s Theatre of Charlotte and Women’s Impact Fund. Miller will work closely with staff, board members, and community partners to sustain momentum and guide the organization through this exciting period of growth.

“Hiring Lisa, is a capstone in Three Bone's evolution as a well managed, financially stable theatre that produces artistic excellence as a catalyst for conversation and change.” says Octavia Seawell, Board Chair of Three Bone Theatre.

Thanking a remarkable volunteer executive director

After over 13 remarkable years of service, Becky Schultz, Three Bone Theatre’s volunteer Executive Director, will be stepping down from the role this spring. Schultz will maintain her role on the Board of Directors and has also been bestowed the honorary title of Backbone Emerita.

“It’s hard to overstate the impact that Becky has had on the organization and our artists over the years,” says Tynes-Miller. “Becky’s business acumen and unwavering championship have led us to the growth point we’re at now. It’s going to be an exciting next chapter.”

Schultz  joined Three Bone Theatre during its first Charlotte production in 2013, and went on to help produce more than 47 productions over her tenure. Under her leadership, Three Bone Theatre became a 501(c)(3) in 2014 and was twice honored as the North Carolina Theatre Conference’s George A. Parides Professional Theatre of the Year. Reflecting on her ongoing relationship with the organization, Schultz adds, “I will remain actively involved as a Board member and am fully committed to supporting Lisa and the organization during this transition and beyond. Three Bone Theatre will always be a part of who I am.”

Looking towards the future

Looking ahead, Three Bone Theatre enters this next chapter with real momentum. The company continues its bold, socially engaged programming with Primary Trust opening next week and Oedipus el Rey wrapping up their Luis Alfaro Trilogy in May. They’ll close the season with Sovereignty by Mary Kathryn Nagle, a Cherokee playwright, in partnership with the Museum of the Cherokee People.

Additionally, Three Bone Theatre recently announced that it assumed management of The Arts Factory in historic West End through a partnership with the Arts & Science Council and Mecklenburg County.

Three Bone Theatre will launch its milestone 15th season in November. With new full-time leadership, a dedicated Board, and the continued support of donors and partners, Three Bone Theatre is expanding access, supporting artists, and creating space for vital stories, positioning the organization for a dynamic and sustainable future.

Excitement and Gratitude

Co-founder and Artistic Director, Tynes-Miller is excited for this new chapter, but recognizes change is bittersweet. “This milestone belongs to our community—and to Becky , whose vision and generosity helped build Three Bone Theatre into what it is today. We’re profoundly grateful for our artists, audiences, donors, and volunteers who made this growth possible."

As we step into our next chapter, Three Bone Theatre is energized and excited to keep building what comes next—together.

To honor this milestone, we invite you to consider making a donation in support of Three Bone Theatre’s next chapter. Your generosity helps ensure bold, intimate theatre continues to thrive in Charlotte. We also hope you’ll celebrate with us in person by joining us for our upcoming production—there’s no better way to be part of what comes next.
